Customer Reviews
I bought this unit about a month ago, and I am returning it to Amazon this week. Overall the unit functions well, the sound quality is very good and the setup was not hard (I would describe myself as a very tech-able person...not an expert, but I know my way around). But, the reason I am returning it is that there were a few functions and things it did that told me I would not be satisfied with this unit in the long run.
For comparison, this unit was replacing a 5.1 Sony Dream System that I got probably 8-9 years ago. That unit worked fine with my previous setup, but we got a new TV, and the new TV did not have analog audio out, so I realized if I wanted to continue to have surround sound on our TV, movies and gaming (XBox) I would need a new unit. This was fine with me due to the age of the old system and the fact that our Blu-Ray player was a big box, 1st gen model that I had to update firmware with manually, and obviously didn't have any of the bells and whistles of newer units. So, getting a new HTIB with Blu-Ray included was killing a couple of birds with one stone.
I chose the LG LHB976 for a few reasons - the price was good (not great), I have been impressed with many of LG's recent technological products (our new TV is an LG, neighbor's TV, wife's phone, etc.), and the unit had a few good reviews on Amazon (and the bad reviews seemed picky or from people who had no idea what they were doing). But, after getting it set up I began to notice a few glitches that, by themselves, were no big deal, but added together they made me realize I would not be happy keeping this unit for the next 8-9 years like I had with my previous unit (I don't think I'd be happy with it for even 4-5 years, and with an investment like this you should at least get that much use out of it).
First, it would not play a regular DVD. My wife wanted to work out to a DVD series she owns (Insanity). Playing a DVD seems like a pretty basic functionality. But, when I put the disc in it didn't even recognize that there was a DVD in, it thought it was a data disc and would not play it. I tried shutting down and restarting it a couple of times, but it never worked. This meant she had to use the XBox to play her DVD, which aside from being a hassle, was more confusing for her. I try to make all of our technology very user friendly for her, but I had to type out a set of instructions for her on how to do this because of the 2nd reason...
Second, the unit is not compatible with universal remotes like my Logitech Harmony One. Or, to make it compatible you must have to be some kind of engineering whiz. The problem lies in the fact that this unit does not switch from input to input like our previous unit. There is the standard list of inputs (AM, FM, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, etc.), but to watch a movie you have to go to the "Home" screen and choose "Movie". So, you can't program a universal remote to switch from HDMI 1 to "Movie". You can tell it to go to the Home screen and then choose movie, but again, I'm trying to idiot-proof this for my wife and other people that might use the system. Also, for the few things that I could program it to do with the Logitech (like switching from watching TV - HDMI 1 - to playing XBox - HDMI 2) it was inconsistent in executing this command. This is pretty simple - switching from one to the other - but it could not consistently execute this task. And yes, I kept the remote pointed at it for a sufficient length of time, I know how these things work. I did it once and it worked, then I tried to do it again and it did not work. This is simply unacceptable. This may have something to do with one of the other problems I noticed - that I would have to press buttons on the remote more than once sometimes to get it to execute the command. Again, this is unacceptable. This should be the easiest thing in the world - press a button, something happens.
Third, I would describe this as the system being too clever by half or too smart for its own good. The unit would automatically switch between sound levels (5.1, Dolby, etc.) and input types (HDMI, SD, etc.) depending on the channel or source you were watching. In theory this sounds good, but it is frustrating when you are watching a TV show and the sound drops out for a second or two every minute, and you look down and see that it is because the surround sound system has automatically adjusted the sound field. This may be a feature that can be turned off, but after the other problems I had experienced I had already decided to return this unit, so I did not research it. As for the picture adjustment, it would do the same thing - the picture would go black sometimes at random intervals, and you could see that the system was adjusting the video quality automatically.
So, I am returning this system and looking at the Sony BDV-E780W system. My previous Sony system worked wonderfully for many years, and Sony is definitely a more established name in this field. But, if that system does not work I'll return it too until I get it right. As technology gets better it should be easier to use, not harder, and this system was just going to be unworkable in our household.
First of all don't expect the LG LHB976 to blow you away with mind blowing surround sound. It's good enough for you to enjoy the sound effects of 5.1 movies and TV. But your room won't shake, rattle and roll. The passive sub-woofer can't deliver the booming effects you'll get from a powered sub. And that also limits this from being a great music system. I do really like the Integrated Wi-Fi and Smart TV aspects of this however. And the wireless rear speakers are just what I needed. Please be aware the rear speakers are actually wired to the Wi-Fi transmitter(Which works great by the way}. So you do need an electrical outlet, and you'll have wires running from the transmitter. The Smart TV is a bit complicated in the initial navigation, but with a little trial and error you'll figure it out. For an inexpensive surround system I think it's well worth the money. If you have a small enough room, and can spend a bit more, I would suggest the Polk Audio SoundBar 50. I couldn't keep mine because the room was to big for the surround effects to work. But I'm telling you with a powered sub, that thing did blow me away.
Update 3 months later: I experienced a problem with the rear speakers where they would not deliver anything but occasional loud static, even though they were linked just fine. Customer service was great! They told me which parts to return(Receiver, both speakers and link receiver). I was e-mailed a shipping label, and then was called about a week later to let me know the unit had been tested and that the parts required were back ordered and it would be two weeks before I would have it back. I appreciate the communication and the overall customer service professionalism. I've had no further problems, and am totally enjoying the surround experience they provide. Another benefit I've discovered is the ability to share with the media in your home computer through a wireless router. The only thing keeping me from making this a 5 star is the less than stellar performance in music playback.
